What is the Best Grooming Schedule for My Breed?
One of the questions we are asked regularly is how often a dog needs to be groomed. We have found there’s a lot of misinformation floating around– including do-it-yourself tips for grooming your pet at home.
Having your dog professionally groomed will save you time, energy, and ensures the safety of your pet and yourself. Not all pets are comfortable with the process, and professionals are trained to handle all situations. Also, if you don’t have experience with your breed’s standard cut, you will likely have trouble emulating that cut.
As for the grooming schedule, here is a quick guide to help you get started, but as always, be sure to speak with us about your dog. As with people, each dog is an individual with unique needs.
Short-Haired Breeds: Chihuahua, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Dalmatian, etc
Short-haired breeds require the least amount of maintenance. While some breeds can go up to 3 months without a visit to The Groomery, it’s recommended that you bathe your dog (even the short-haired breeds) at least once every 8-10 weeks. Be sure to brush your pup at least once a week to keep the shedding down and their coat clean.
Medium-Hair Breeds: Border Collie, Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Irish Settler
Medium-haired breeds require a bit more maintenance. On average, it’s common for them to visit us every 6-8 weeks. Be sure to brush them at least twice a week.
Long-Hair Breeds: Wheaten Terrier, Bearded Collie, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu
Long-haired breeds require the MOST amount of maintenance. They should be visiting the groomers at least once a month, and to cut down on mats and clumps, be sure to brush them at least three times a week.
